Dr. Medina-Cetina is the Director of the Stochastic Geomechanics Laboratory @SGLtamu (2008 - Present). He is a Civil Engineer from the Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan UADY Mexico (Soil Dynamics, 1994), and a Master of Engineering from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico UNAM (Geostatistics, 1996). While at the UNAM, he served as adjunct faculty in the College of Engineering and worked as a research assistant for the Instituto de Ingenieria I de I (1996 - 2001). During this same period of time, he worked as independent consultant and project manager of the Geostatistical Site Characterization of multiple large scale projects around the world (1998-2001).

Dr. Medina-Cetina obtained a Masters of Science and a Philosophy Doctorate at The Johns Hopkins University (Stochastic Mechanics, 2001- 2006). He held a dual appointment at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute NGI in Oslo Norway (2006 - 2008), in the International Centre for Geohazards ICG and in the Computational Geomechanics Division CGD. His research and consulting interests in Offshore Site Investigation and Geotechnics include System’s Mapping of Risk, Reliability and Sensibility Analysis; Probabilistic Site Characterization for Integrated Studies (Geology, Geophysics and Geotechnical); and Uncertainty Quantification of Multi-Physics Geomechanical Processes.
He was elected twice Chair of SUT's Offshore Site Investigation and Geotechnics Committee OSIG (2012-2015). Under his leadership he set OSIG's vision and mission, and made OSIG grow to include the most recognized leaders in Geology, Geophysics, Geotechnical Engineering, Geomatics, Metocean, Nautical Archaeology, and related Business Management; all building together one of the most ambitious industry-academia programs in the world, by integrating knowledge from multiple disciplines to improve site characterization practices and to better educate the offshore professionals of today and tomorrow.
