BIO:
Amedeo Marcotulli is the General Manager- Americas at Xodus Subsea. He is a native of Caracas, Venezuela after 15 years in Houston  still misses the majestic Avila. A Mechanical Engineer,  Universidad Simon Bolivar is his alma mater and after his MBA at Texas A&M is also a proud Aggie.

He has over 28 years of eclectic experience that includes executive management, subsea engineering, project management, business consulting, information technologies, research & development, teaching. His job has taken him around the globe – The Americas, Europe, Asia, Australia.

Amedeo has been attracted to the topics in this presentation since graduate school, while studying MS Engineering Design where he learned structured system design while developing  enterprise project management software. Since then he has rigorously applied system engineering tools to tame the complexity in deep-water engineering projects. His passion for value creation got him involved in Field Development Planning where his inner architect can have fun thinking holistically.

Abstract:
In these challenging times for the oil industry everybody talks about cost reduction, but the answer is not that trivial. Very rarely can we achieve a cost reduction that does not affect the functional requirements of the system. Generally every cost reduction generates a tradeoff on performance or other aspects of the life of field economics. It is not about cost reduction is about value optimization. Value engineering implies life of the field optimization ( eNPV value)

This presentation will challenge conventions;  it is not the typical presentation: Highly abstract , conceptual. Strategic not tactical. It proposes a different approach – Systemic and holistic based on universal project management practices – widely adopted in other industries. A new approach that requires a different mode of thinking with profound impact in our organizations and PMT systems : Synthesis vs Analysis – We need architects not engineers. With good Front End Engineering- Early decisions create value( if they are correct). Good decisions reduce complexity and  uncertainty increases it,  but  nature is not deterministic. Hence a probabilistic approach is required.
Systems engineering recognize the iterative nature of the design process and use taxonomy as a tool to manage complexity (WBS). Complex projects require PMT best practices and IT tools; Interface management is one of the biggest challenges. We need a new kind of subsea engineers with a different holistic mindset more akin to an architect.

Society for Underwater Technology - This multi-disciplinary learned society brings together organizations and individuals with  common interests in underwater technology, ocean science and offshore engineering. The SUT was founded in 1966 in London and has members from more than 40 countries including engineers, scientists, other professionals and students working in these areas.

The SUT was founded to promote the further understanding of the underwater environment  to encourage cross fertilization and dissemination of ideas, experience and information between workers in academic research, applied research and technology, industry and government development of techniques and tools to explore and study oceans, proper economic and sociological use of our resources in and beneath the oceans, further education of scientists and technologists to maintain high standards in marine science and technology.
