Abstract:
When it comes to riser design, riser engineers go through painstaking efforts to create accurate design models.  Yet, even the best models require  assumptions to be made in behavior and environment.

Production riser monitoring is a relatively new field allowing operators to gather real-world data from the riser system and environment.  Sensor networks are now being used to provide data and help with decision making to enhance production, reduce risk, and to operate safely.  This data is being used to calibrate the original design model and to accurately measure fatigue life consumption of the riser over the course of its design life.  With this data, operators are able to make informed decisions on asset life extension and utilize lessons learned to create a feedback loop for future designs.  This can result in reduced conservatism, reduced costs and increased safety for future developments.

This presentation will explain the basics of production riser monitoring technologies and will detail two case studies of production riser monitoring systems in the Gulf of Mexico.

This multi-disciplinary learned society brings together organizations and individuals with  common interests in underwater technology, ocean science and offshore engineering. The SUT was founded in 1966 in London and has members from more than 40 countries including engineers, scientists, other professionals and students working in these areas.

The SUT was founded to promote the further understanding of the underwater environment  to encourage cross fertilization and dissemination of ideas, experience and information between workers in academic research, applied research and technology, industry and government development of techniques and tools to explore and study oceans, proper economic and sociological use of our resources in and beneath the oceans, further education of scientists and technologists to maintain high standards in marine science and technology
