Bio:  Amanda Evans, RPA, serves as Senior Marine Archaeologist with Tesla Offshore, LLC, where she has been employed since 2005.  She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Indiana University, Master’s degree from Florida State University, and a Ph.D. from Louisiana State University.  Amanda has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and recently co-edited the volume Prehistoric Archaeology on the Continental Shelf.  Amanda currently serves on the board of directors for the Society for Historical Archaeology, and the Advisory Council on Underwater Archaeology.  She previously served on the board of directors for the Register of Professional Archaeologists.  She is a member of the SUT – Houston Branch Offshore Site Investigation and Geotechnics Committee.

Abstract:  Archaeologists study the physical remains of the human past in order to learn more about the peoples and cultures that came before us.  Careful recording and analysis allow scientists to piece together information from broken and scattered objects.  Interpretations developed from individual sites are compared across other sites and regions to develop patterns of past human behavior.  These patterns are influenced by what has been found, and more importantly, by what has not.  Legislation including the National Historic Preservation Act (1966) seeks to protect our shared national heritage, and requires that federally permitted actions, such as offshore drilling and pipeline installation, consider the impact of the action on historically significant resources in the project area.  Critically, as offshore industry operates in previously underexplored areas, new and previously unknown information is found.  A fundamental question in prehistoric archaeology pertains to the arrival of the first humans in the Western Hemisphere; who were they, and when and how did they get here.  Increasingly, this evidence appears to be along the coastal margins, on the now-submerged continental shelf.  Archaeological data collected as part of the offshore permitting process has the potential to help answer one of modern archaeology’s biggest mysteries.

Society for Underwater Technology - This multi-disciplinary learned society brings together organizations and individuals with  common interests in underwater technology, ocean science and offshore engineering. The SUT was founded in 1966 in London and has members from more than 40 countries including engineers, scientists, other professionals and students working in these areas.

The SUT was founded to promote the further understanding of the underwater environment  to encourage cross fertilization and dissemination of ideas, experience and information between workers in academic research, applied research and technology, industry and government development of techniques and tools to explore and study oceans, proper economic and sociological use of our resources in and beneath the oceans, further education of scientists and technologists to maintain high standards in marine science and technology
