Abstract

Geotechnical engineers have to deal with uncertainty and risk all the time. Uncertainties are often addressed indirectly through the choice of safety factors, and conservative choice of characteristic load and resistance. Important geotechnical engineering decisions need to be made without knowing for certain how the decision will play out, introducing risk and making it difficult to communicate the risks associated with decisions to stakeholders such as owners, regulatory agencies and the public.

Reliability theory, which is used to calculate probability of failure and risk, provides the framework to account for uncertainties in a systematic manner. This webinar will provide case studies on how to use reliability theory to address the key uncertainties in offshore foundation design directly, and to achieve the desired safety level given the uncertainties. It will also demonstrate how reliability-based design can be used for calibration of partial load and resistance factors in LRFD.

About the Presenter
Dr. Farrokh Nadim is Technical Director at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI). His major fields of work are related to risk assessment and reliability analysis, design of offshore foundations, onshore and offshore geohazards (landslides, earthquakes and tsunamis), and geotechnical earthquake engineering.

Dr. Nadim has a wide background from research, consulting and university teaching; as well as leadership and management experience as Project Manager of both con¬sulting and research projects. From 2003 to 2012, he was the Director of the International Centre for Geohazards (ICG), one of the first Centres of Excellence in Norway.

Currently, he is the Project Manager for the large Joint-Industry Project on "Reliability of Axial Pile Calculation Methods for Offshore Design" run by NGI in collaboration with University of Western Australia.

Dr. Nadim is the author or co-author of over 160 scientific publications.
